“In this passage, Jesus speaks to the crowds about worry and anxiety, encouraging them to avoid worrying about what they will eat or wear, and instead to place their whole trust in God. Just prior to this moment, a man interrupts Jesus, asking him to arbitrate a disagreement with his brother about dividing their family inheritance. Jesus responds by warning against greed and placing too much value on material possessions.

Jesus’ words about worry, therefore, are a lesson on living with an abundance mindset instead of a scarcity mentality. He warns against becoming so consumed with your own needs and worries that you are blind to the needs of those around you. Jesus points to the poetry of the lilies of the field and the birds of the air who thrive in their environments without storing up treasures, without believing the fear of not having enough.

In this painting, I reimagined the lilies of the field as water lilies. Water lilies do not hoard the nutrients and resources of their surroundings—instead they purify the water so that all the organisms in the pond can thrive.
