Into the Waters
Tune: HERZLIEBSTER JESU (“Ah Holy Jesus”)
Text: Anna Strickland, 2024
Music: Johann Crüger (1640)
Into the waters, timid and unsteady
Bare feet find purchase in the water’s eddies
Eyes fixed on Jesus while the storm is raging
And waves are breaking
But then the winds shift and I let my gaze break
Fear starts to drag me underneath the lake’s waves
In my distress I cry out to my Savior,
“Save me from danger!”
Safe in the boat I wonder where the fault lies
Was it the storm or my own reckless desire
To have control or prove myself as able
Rather than faithful
Grace for the journey, grace for all my failings
Grace when I’m sinking, grace when storms assail me
Faith in myself and faith in God’s provision
Not my ambition
