"In a season full of gentle manger and nativity scenes, I wanted to also show a glimpse of what happens after the birth: Mary, Joseph, and their newborn fleeing to Egypt to escape the wrath of King Herod. I rendered them minimally, in strokes of black watercolor to emphasize this somber turn in the story. As the figures walk along a barren path, the infant’s eyes lock eyes with our own, as if Jesus, even as an infant, is insisting that we dare to see the humanity in the suffering and the refugee."

“Jesus offers the crowd (us) a layered and complicated choice, one that is as complex as his own dualistic nature. The first option is self-denial, a heavy burden, and a lost—but saved—life. The second is gaining the whole world, but forfeiting life. It’s easy for a seasoned Christian to take this choice for granted. This choice that Jesus calls us into may even seem like a no brainer, but in this moment, Jesus teaches of the terrors that will befall him and invites the crowd to knowingly face that path alongside him. If we’re honest, it is extremely difficult to reject the tempting power and wealth this world has to offer and allow our life to take the shape of good news for all.
The choice isn’t an obvious one. One side looks like an opulent pile of riches, a crown, and endless power, while the other looks like tattered and worn hands with new life blooming out of wounds, work, burdens and relationships. This choice may seem like a distant decision made long ago, but it’s a decision to be made every single day, one moment at a time. In working for and with the downtrodden, poor, orphaned, widowed, ostracized, and oppressed, we will find ourselves.”

“I think it’s easy to forget the visual cacophony of this familiar scene. We often celebrate this moment in the Jesus story with hallelujahs and children waving palms, but I imagine the original palm procession into Jerusalem was filled with a bit of horror and confusion too. Jesus, the so-called leader of the Jews, enters the holy city on a poor man’s mount instead of being lifted like royalty on the backs of servants. For the first time in his ministry, he allows the crowds to celebrate him, but how many stood back in dismay? He sits on the back of the colt as a servant anti-king, disappearing into the horizon that will soon bring him to calvary hill.
In this image, I wanted us to get lost in the blur of palm fronds as a reminder of how disorienting this act truly is. Gold palms curl around a monotone Jesus as he rides onward while the crosses on calvary hill loom in the distance. Jesus is depicted as colorless in a widening landscape of color to foreshadow the way life will soon drain from his flesh into the world. The sky above and the path below remain blank, open to be filled by how heaven and earth will be affected by the events to come. On this day, we celebrate Jesus as king and anti-king, leader and servant, holy and human, riding into the land that will lead him to death.”

“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46)
“Pain, fear, and helplessness overwhelm Jesus as he declares, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ In this portrayal of that moment, I was drawn to depict these critically human emotions. This year, I am particularly struggling with how quickly I have moved from Lent to Eastertide in previous years without taking the brokenness of Lent and Jesus' death forward with me after the resurrection. For me, visually, Easter has been full of beauty, joy, and wonder—eclipsing the devastation of Good Friday. Here, I surrounded Jesus' head with a halo of lilies, causing beauty and pain to collide. Painting in oil on canvas, the experience of producing this work was powerful.”
