This Lent, adorn your sanctuary with elements of the wilderness. Instead of running away from the wilderness, bring the wilderness in—to face it, confront it, and find your way through it. These elements remind us of the many layers of the wilderness—in these layers we find meaning and the courage to carry on.
This worship art project invites members of all ages to create wilderness art together. The project includes contemplative liturgy with poetry so that your creative process is worshipful and deeply meaningful.
About the project:
This worship art project includes three phases, however, you are welcome to execute one, two, or all three of the phases. We hope you will adapt the project to best meet the desires and needs of your community. In summary, the three phases are as follows:
PHASE ONE | AN INTERGENERATIONAL CONTEMPLATIVE LITURGY TO ACCOMPANY CREATING WILDERNESS VASE DISPLAYS
Members of all ages create the wilderness vases together using an accompanying liturgy that meditates on the theme of wilderness through poetry, scripture, and song.
PHASE TWO | CREATE A WILDERNESS INSTALLATION IN YOUR SANCTUARY
Using our design guide, adorn your worship space with the wilderness elements.PHASE THREE | OPENING LITANY FOR WORSHIP TO INTRODUCE THE WILDERNESS ELEMENTS
At the start of the Lenten season, begin worship with an opening litany to highlight and introduce the wilderness elements adorning the sanctuary.
Download includes:
8-page PDF Project Guide with photos, links to materials needed, and step by step instructions.
The guide lays out the 3 phases of the project with instructions for how to implement each stage.
The guide also includes instructions for phase two—using the wilderness vase displays to create a wilderness installation in your sanctuary. We provide a design guide and tips for how to approach creating the installation.
7-page PDF Phase One Contemplative Liturgy
This contemplative liturgy incorporates poetry (by Sarah Are), scripture, and song to guide you in creating wilderness vase displays together. Similar to an Advent wreath-making workshop, phase one could be an intergenerational event, or it could be used with a youth group or small group.
2-page PDF Phase Three Opening Litany for Worship
A scripted litany to highlight the wilderness elements in your art installation at the start of your Lenten worship. The litany is formatted for 4 speaking parts.
